MCHD First Responder
Many life-threatening events require trained professional to be on scene within 6-8 minutes. Nationally, governing bodies recognize that such ambulance response parameters are cost prohibitive. Instead, MCHD has established a comprehensive, county-wide first responder program. MCHD partnered with the Montgomery County fire departments to achieve this goal. The relationship makes good sense. The fire departments have stations in most every community, providing saturation not possible or practical with ambulances.
Many firefighters maintain EMS certifications, and those that do not, have been willing to be trained. Each year, MCHD provides 446 classroom hours to elevate their knowledge and skills. In addition, MCHD has provided the capital funds for the county-wide AED program. MCHD has deployed 120 AED's and the community has provided numerous others.
The MCHD First Response department offers the initial National Registry First Responder (48hrs) and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician classes (160hrs). Both classes are taught at the MCHD Administration office and are offered twice a year for those who want to become trained in prehospital emergency medicine.
We have brought the 16 Fire Departments and five Police agencies totaling 577 First Responders under common medical direction and performance oversight. Despite the number of departments involved, Montgomery County has never before had this consistency in care and the security of county-wide medical coverage.
